The Board of Governors approved a contract with the firm Hutchinson Consulting, LLC for $80,000 to be paid in three increments of $26,666.67. In addition to Hutchinson's total salary, the University will reimburse up to $15,000 in expenses including travel, materials and services, report preparation, etc., according to the contract between Hutchinson Consulting LLC and the University.
According to Board member Walter Hicklin, president of the search firm Ken Hutchinson served 42 years in higher-education administration and had corporate responsibilities in all human resources functions at the University of Missouri.
"He also served as chief human resources officer for the Columbia campus before accepting his responsibilities for the four campuses, and hospital and clinics. In addition to serving as the primary contact to the vice president to the governing board to all matters relating to human resources," Hicklin said.
Despite his credentials, this is the first time Hutchison has led a college presidential search, although he has served as staff to the board during two presidential searches and two chancellor searches.
Hutchinson is beginning his presidential search by gathering input from University faculty, students and local community members. In a meeting with chairs of the University's academic departments, Hutchinson asked the faculty members what they were hoping to see in a new president.
"I am absolutely convinced of the boards desire to genuinely and sincerely solicit input throughout the university community and the state community. The thing that I'm confident of is that once the conversation is started, you will think about those competencies that you would like to see and those leadership qualities that you'd like to see in the next president," Hutchinson said.
James Staab, chair of the Political Science Department, asked what steps the board and Hutchinson would take both in the search process and creating an environment of transparency.
