Freshman guard Taylor Hanson set a new Jennies individual record. She scored 10 three-pointers in a single game as the Jennies' basketball team had a high scoring victory Tuesday night, beating Graceland 97-55 at the Multipurpose Building.
The Jennies worked well together and Hanson led all scorers with 35 points. She also tied the school's freshman scoring record with those 35 points, a mark that was set in 1976 by UCM Associate Athletic Director Kathy Anderson. With the night Hanson had, coach Dave Slifer thought this was a perfect way to introduce Hanson to the fans.
"It's really remarkable what we accomplished tonight," Slifer said. "Graceland tried a 2-3 zone strategy. You just can't do that against Central."
Hanson was proud of her accomplishments.
"It feels good," she said. "It's an honor, especially as a freshman."
The Jennies, 2-0, also had success in setting other UCM records by attempting 43 three-pointers and making 19, breaking the old mark of 14 set in 2005.
"Team work really led to our success," Hanson said. "We also had a lot of hard work and dedication."
The Jennies led 10-5 early, but used a 23-8 run to break the game open midway through the first half. UCM cruised into the halftime break with a 47-30 lead.
Although the team had a victorious night held Graceland to shooting just 29 percent from the floor, the Jennies feel there are still a few kinks to work out. The team agreed that its defense has to improve.
"We really need to work on defense," said Meghan Waggoner, a junior guard. "We have to get after those rebounds."
Following Hanson's 35 points, junior guard Melia Pence finished the game with a career-high 19 points and eight rebounds. Other scorers in double figures were junior guard Meghan Waggoner with 11 and sophomore forward Becca Roberts with 10.
The Jennies now have to prepare for the upcoming event in the Texas A&M Kingsville Thanksgiving Shootout. The two game invitational where the Jennies will face Kingsville and Texas A&M-International beings Nov. 28 in Kingsville, Texas.
The Jennies will not have another home game until Dec. 13 when it takes on conference foe Emporia State.
