Nelson, who took over as dean in August 2007, said the concept of an integrated fine and performing arts program at UCM makes sense because of the opportunities it would offer the students and the community.

"The University sees itself as a cultural and academic center for the region, so we need to offer a wide range of programs and events," Nelson said. "The integration of the arts at Central will create a more dynamic culture."

Theater Department Chair Richard J. Herman said the idea of a fine arts center on campus has been a shared vision by many faculty members. He said some of the facilities at UCM no longer meet the students' needs and having the artistic disciplines in one place interacting will improve the academic experience.

"Hendricks Hall was built many years ago and has lots of limitations in terms of the size of the stage, backstage space and small dressing rooms. The students will benefit tremendously from being able to share theater, music, dance and art in one facility," Herman said. "A fine arts center has been a vision at UCM for many years and the hope that it could come to fruition is exciting."

Boone said there are several professors, such as Nelson, Herman, Communication Department Chair Terry Cunconan and himself putting teams together for the golf benefit.

Although Boone and Nelson said the idea of a fine arts center is still "a dream" and a long-term goal, it is also one of their top priorities.

They have the backing of many faculty members and through the events during the next eight months, they hope to gain the support of the administration and community. Boone said it is a large undertaking, but the arts center is a project that will benefit everyone involved.

"These kinds of projects are important to advance everyone's goals," Boone said. "Our vision of integrating the fine and performing arts is big, but I think we're all on board. The outreach to the community through the arts is important."
