The Central Missouri Mules' golf team had to settle for a second place finish as the Heart of America Classic concluded Tuesday at Keth Memorial Golf Course. This was the only home event of the season for Central Missouri.
The Mules only trailed defending league champion Washburn by three strokes in the first MIAA sanctioned competition of the spring schedule. The Mules trailed by one stroke coming into the final round but WU shot a one-over 285 while UCM put up a 287. The next closest team was Missouri Southern in third as they finished 21 strokes behind the Mules.
Sophomore Justin Yoder and junior Ty Needels finished in a four-way tie for second place in the individual competition.
Individually, Yoder and Needles each shot one-over with a two-round total of 143. Sophomore Jon Wrast finished in a tie for seventh as well. Yoder tied for the best round of the week individually with a 69 (-2) Tuesday.
Yoder was also named the MIAA Golfer of the Week after he rallied from a five-shot deficit, carding a five-under 67 in the final round to claim medalist honors at the Western New Mexico Mustang Intercollegiate Invitational played in Albuquerque, N.M., March 18.
The next event for coach Tim Poe and the Mules will be the Missouri Western Invitational. That tournament is schedule for Monday and Tuesday.
