Womble said he had a girl come into this class the day after she had missed a test and told him that she was sorry she had missed the test, but she had gotten her naval pierced the night before and it had not stopped bleeding yet.
He said the best part of the whole story was after she finished telling him her story, she lifted up her shirt in front of the whole class to show him that she really had gotten her naval pierced. She had her back to the class so they could not see her pierced navel but could see what she was doing.
"All I could say to that was, 'yeah, that's a pierced naval,'" Womble said.
Andrew Crowther of the Criminal Justice Department said he had a student who called him before class to tell him she had a nosebleed and she was not going to come to class.
Crowther said he has been thinking about writing a book of all the excuses he has heard from students.
Holland had a student give him a note from a doctor to excuse her for missing class. He said he did not think things were right with her note, so he looked into it. He found out that the student's roommate's boyfriend's father was a doctor and he had stolen his pad and was writing excuses for students.
Pets are another reason students sometimes have to miss class.
"I had a student tell me she was sorry she had missed the midterm but her dog had had puppies," Womble said.
Holland said he had a student tell him they did not get their work done because they dog had run away and they had spent time looking for the dog.
Professors also hear many weather-related excuses. Math Professor Sue Sunburg said she had a student call her from a campus phone number to tell her they were not going to be able to make it to class because of the snow. Sunburg also had a student call her and tell her they were not going to come to class because it was raining.
Some excuses students come up with are not believable to anyone. Sunburg said one of her colleagues told her about a student who e-mailed to tell her she would not be able to do her homework because they did not have the Internet.
