Students can get tax filing help free from UCM accounting students who volunteer with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. VITA is governed by the IRS, and its office is located at the Missouri Valley Community Action Agency at 124 N. Holden St.
The office hours are Monday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, you may call 747-2245.
Art seminar
The Art Department will host internationally recognized painter, Robert Colescott, and Jandava Cattron, Colescott's partner and agent, Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in Union 238.
Colescott is the first African-American artist to represent the United States in the Venice Biennale, an international art exhibition, and his paintings are in the collections of major museums throughout the United States.
A reception will follow in the Art Center Main Gallery.
David Baker prizes
The Department of English is now accepting submissions for the annual David Baker prizes in poetry and fiction writing. The contest will be judged by nationally prominent and published authors.
All undergraduate students can apply, and winners will receive $500 each. Participants can submit no more than five poems and/or two short stories to Professor Kevin Prufer's mailbox in Martin 336.
All submissions are due Friday. Winners will be announced mid-March, and winning students will be asked to read their work at the annual UCM Arcade Magazine and Baker Prize readings in April.
Warrensburg talent show
Warrensburg Parks and Recreation (WPR) is looking for talented individuals and groups to participate in a live talent show. The show is open to participants of all ages.
All songs, skits, dance and comedy are accepted. Acts should be entered by Friday. There is no registration fee. The top 20 acts will perform in the show March 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the Warrensburg Community Center.
The show is open to the public for $5, and all proceeds go to the WPR Youth Scholarship Fund. For more information, you may call 747-7178.
Religious Studies speakers
The Center for Religious Studies will have guest lectures on the Soka Gakkai Panel. The speaker will be Ray Bosch, Environment Protection Agency attorney, UMKC professor Matt Fourstater and KU professor Cheryl Utley. The class is Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in LOV 1290.
