The Department of Health and Human Performance is hosting the Bob Tompkins Memorial 5K Run/Walk, Saturday. Participants will receive a T-shirt and a pancake breakfast before the event.
Religious studies professor invited
to edit encyclopedia
Marla J. Selvidge, a professor of religious studies at UCM, was invited to edit a new encyclopedia on women and religion tentatively titled "Women and the Bible: An Encyclopedia of Exegesis and History of Culture." She will be traveling to Naples, Italy in December to plan the volume.
The project will include scholars from all over the world and will be published in several languages. The volumes will analyze stories of women in the Bible, including those which have already been interpreted by Bible scholars. It will focus on discovering women in history, hymns, legal texts and iconography.
Brother stabs brother
Warrensburg police responded to the scene of a stabbing at 914 E. Market St., Apt. 8A Oct. 3, at approximately 11 p.m. Officers determined a juvenile male was stabbed with a knife in the upper left torso by his brother, 18-year-old Shane N. Cook. Cook was arrested for assault and the juvenile was taken to Western Missouri Medical Center for treatment and was later released.
Lynn Stoppy, Johnson County assistant prosecutor, filed a charge of first degree assault against Cook in connection with the incident. A warrant for his arrest was issued Oct. 4. Bond was set at $10,000.
Spotlight sponsors swing and salsa dance
UCM students, friends and family may attend the Student Swing and Salsa Dance Thursday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Free lessons will be offered from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. The UCM Jazz Ensemble will be providing live music for dancing. For more information, you may call 543-8881.

Lady Elks host holiday craft show
The ladies of the Warrensburg Elks Lodge are hosting the Holiday Craft and Vendor Show Saturday at the Elks Lodge on Business 50 West from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The displays will include quilts, silk flowers, hand loomed rugs, jewelry, candles, Avon products, Boyd's Bears, Home Interiors and more. The ladies will be selling food and drinks. There will also be a raffle for an artificial flower arrangement. Admission is free.
UCM staff and students teach basic Spanish workshops
UCM staff and students from Spanish-speaking countries invite the campus and community members to attend the Basic Spanish Language Workshops in the University Union.
Each class session will be from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 23 in Union 219, Oct. 24-26 in Union 238 and Oct. 27 in Union 123. The workshops are free and open to the public. For more information, you may contact the UCM Office of Community Engagement at 543-4156.
Arcade Magazine accepting submissions
Arcade, a student-edited literary/art magazine, is now considering submissions of short fiction, non-fiction, poetry, essays, art, plays, photography and any other short, creative works. There is a competitive submission process, but it reflects the intellectual and creative community on the UCM campus.
To submit up to five pieces of work, drop it off in any of the Arcade boxes in the English and Philosophy Department or the Art Department. Work can be submitted electronically to arcademagazine@gmail.com. Be sure all text submissions are in .rtf format and all art submissions are in .jpg format, at least 300 dpi. Please include contact information. The deadline for submissions is Nov. 21.
UCM Debate Team challeges British National Debate Champions
Two members of the British National Debate Championship Team, Frasier Campbell of Scotland and Gavin Illsley of Oxford University, will compete with two members of the UCM Debate team Friday at 3 p.m. in Utt Recital Hall.
Michael Bailey and Janis McCambridge will represent the UCM team in a British style debate, where a great deal of humor is used to engage the audience. The resolution of the debate is "This House believes that the United States should cooperate more fully with the United Nations to secure peace, security and human rights for the international community."
Halloween costumes equal free bowling
Alcohol Awareness Week, the Spotlight and Cosmo Bowl are sponsoring a Halloween Bowl Oct. 31 from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. in the Union. If you dress up, bowling is free. If not, it is $1. For more information, you may contact Grace Friedel at 543-4342.
Friends of Music Society host celebration of Mozart
The Friends of Music Society will host "The Voice of Mozart: A Jubilee Concert" Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Hart Recital Hall. The concert is in celebration of the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth. UCM music faculty, guest artists and students will be presenting excerpts from some of his most famous works.
Mule Train members invited to Homecoming Parade viewing
Maurine Achauer, of 314 S. Holden St., invites all UCM Mule Train members to her home to watch the Homecoming Parade. Members are welcome to begin gathering at 9 a.m.. The parade begins at 9:30 a.m.
Gail Worth speaks at UCM
Gail Worth, president and owner of Gail's Harley-Davidson in Grandview, Mo., will speaking speaking today from 11 a.m. to noon in the Elliott Union Ballroom.
Worth is the recipient of UCM's 2006 American Marketing Association (AMA) Distinguished Executive award. The presentation is sponsored by UCM's chapter of AMA and the Department of Marketing and Legal Studies. There is no charge and students, faculty and staff are invited to attend.
Phi Kappa Phi honors UCM faculty and staff
Phi Kappa Phi will be accepting nominations now through Friday for faculty and staff who have performed outstanding achievements or services at UCM. Members can be initiated as students, faculty or staff.

Talking Mules host debate tournament
The UCM Talking Mules hosted its annual Missouri Mule Intercollegiate Tournament last weekend, which attracted 56 entries from Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, Nebraska, Illinois and Missouri. The tournament included resolutions from a grant project sponsored by the International Debate Education Association.
The Talking Mules' next tournament appearance will be at Creighton University Oct. 20 through Oct. 22.
Fire safety survey
Every year, college students are injured or killed as a result of fire on and off campus. In response to National Fire Prevention Week, UCM is conducting a survey about college students' fire experience, preparedness and response. Questions can be answered online at http://www.cmsu.edu/surveys/?formID=996. The survey will be available until Oct. 31.

Paramahamsa Prajnanananda speaks on religion
Swami Paramahamsa Prajnanananda, an author and writer proficient in many languages, will be speaking at UCM Oct. 26 in the University Union.
His first presentation, "Creativity and World Religions," will be at 11 a.m. in Union 240, and his second presentation, "Loving Your Neighbor Can Change the World," will be at 2 p.m. in Union 240. He will be signing books at 3:30 p.m.
He is the current Swami of a movement called "Kriya Yoga," which is within the many religious tradions of Hinduism. For more information, you may visit www. prajnamission.org.
Lost and Found
The information desk at the Elliott Union will discard lost and found items on Nov. 1. You may come by to reclaim any lost items before that date.
Active Language Learning workshop
Katharina Kracht, a visiting scholar from the University of Bremen in Germany will be hosting the Active Language Learning workshop on Oct. 18 and 25. The first session will be from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Union 236. The second will be from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Union 233.
The sessions can be attended independently of one another, but a certificate will be awarded for coming to both. There is no registration fee.
Podolefsky speaks on Americans with Disabilities Act
Ronnie Podolefsky, attorney, will speak Oct. 11 at 12 p.m. in the Elliott Union 237A. She will be discussing the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Everyone is invited and welcome to bring lunch.

Freedom Scholarship for current UCM students

UCM merchandise ready for purchase
On Oct. 9, vendors in the UCM Retailers Programm began selling items that display the new university name and marks. "With Homecoming planned for this weekend, we know there is a high demand for these new items," said Dale Carder, associate vice president for university advancement and chair of the Name Change Transition Team.
